In My Own Words:
I am a music, book & film lover with very diverse, eclectic tastes. I have an extensive CD collection which often threatens to take over my home and have a passion for listening to and writing about the music I have bought. I live in London, England, which is a great place to be - sometimes - but I also love travelling and broadening my horizons. I especially love Rome, Amsterdam, San Diego and… Read more

Midlife: A Beginner's Guide To Blur ~ Blur
25 of 28 people found the following review helpful:
It's difficult to argue against a track listing which has been chosen by the band and there's no question that this is a terrific compilation which would be a fantastic introduction to the band if you hadn't got any other albums by them. "Parklife", "Beetlebum", "This Is A Low", "Song 2", "Tender" - all superb songs and all present and correct here. However, there are a few fairly shocking omissions. Leaving out their smash number one hit "Country House", for example, is a crime. I know that some of the band have disowned the track and have expressed their distaste at the Blur vs. Oasis phoney Britpop war that was hyped in the media at the time, but it remains a fantastic single and an… Read more

Venus And Mars ~ Wings

Following an album like "Band On The Run" was always going to be a difficult ask, even for an artist as talented and renowned as Paul McCartney and so, when "Venus & Mars" was released in May 1975, it suffered, unfairly, by the inevitable comparisons, rather than being reviewed on its own merits. Largely excellent, "Venus & Mars" was mostly recorded in New Orleans, Louisiana and, despite the change of drummer part of the way through the recording process (Joe English replacing Geoff Britton owing to a personality clash with guitarist Jimmy McCulloch), it is a fluid, cohesive album with a delightfully eclectic feel. More than any Wings album before, this also feels like an album recorded… Read more
University A Cappella! ~ Ben Folds
2 of 3 people found the following review helpful:
My first thoughts about this album when I first heard of the concept was that it could either be really terrible or really great. Well, I was wrong, it's neither. Many of the versions of Ben's songs here are under whelming and tend to lose the emotional power of the originals, such as Greensboro`s "Not The Same" and Folds` own "Boxing" which feels pretentious and over-embellished compared to the understated original. "Selfless, Cold and Composed" by Sacramento State is messy and loses the emotion the original recording conveyed and Rochester University`s "Army" just seems a little lifeless. There are some fantastic moments on this album though, Ohio University's version of "Brick"… Read more
