The White Queen (Cousins War 1) by Philippa Gregory
The White Queen (Cousins War 1) by Philippa Gregory

Whatever colour your queen,if you're interested in history, look elsewhere. If you're looking for well written fiction, look elsewhere. This is lazy writing, extremely poor history lacking any perspective apart from banal stereotypes and exhibiting a half baked understanding of the times especially 'royal' women's harsh lives as political pawns. Overrated, over-hyped drivel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Film, Poor Print, 14 Nov 2010
Just to re-iterate J Bishton's review...this is a great classic but a cheap release. The quality of the film is poor and true to the all consuming profiteering mentality current infesting business practice no investment was made to restore the print nor any effort made to find a better print. Scraps from the table and typical of Region 2 releases. If old and classic films are your thing, as they are mine, invest in a dvd player that plays Region 1 (or adjust your players region code if you can) as they seem to have the cream of the crop.

Unfortunately I also finished the book with the view that it is a potentially great book in desperate search of a good editor. It is also quite ironic and/or enlightening that the book is dedicated to her editor, Jenny Uglow, who has been `supportive and imaginative'. Not I'm afraid the qualities required to make this novel successful but certainly enough to get it shortlisted for the Man Booker and receive a dedication.

We all know Byatt can famously… Read more
