To travel America had been a lifelong dream; I promised myself, that on completing university, I would pluck up the courage and GO!
Being a forty-seven year-old man taking a degree in chemistry had been a challenge and I was ready for another, a failed magical romance at university and broken heart gave me the final push.
I was living at university during my final year and for several months, with a very large map of the USA pinned up on my wall and when America 1 was not taking up the computer with old westerns, my evenings were spent surfing the net and checking out trains, bus travel and private accommodation. The searching proved to be quite difficult as I had no set route or plan other than to live and travel America for as long as possible.
Knowing that Greyhound ran the coach service and the trains by Amtrak helped – but where was I going to stay?
