The book of ultimate truths remains one of Rankin's greatest works and is a must read for any lover of far fetched fiction.
As the start of the Cornelius Murphy trilogy it's also a great place for new readers to Rankin to dip their toes in the water. Trust me, you'll laugh like the drain of legend.

Karl Shuker is probably best known for being one of the worlds most respected and prolific writers on Cryptozoology, Forteana and the paranormal but few people know he is also a superb poet.

Shuker's poems are a wonderful surprise, I picked up the book to have a quick read while drinking a cup of tea and only realised just how engrossed I had become when after 2 hours of reading I realised it had gotten dark outside. The subject matter covered by the poems ranges from nature and cryptozoology (as one might expect from Shuker) right through to religion and the sorrow parting can bring. This book is a hilariously funny satire of the political right.

Anyone with any intelligence who reads it will soon realise that the author is not actually a rabid right-wing BNP voting idiot but trying to expose the idiocy and half baked ideals of them.

The most hilarious passage in the book involves climate change. He reasons that despite almost every scientist in the world believing in it, having even collected physical evidence, the fact that one (that's right one) former member of Greenpeace doesn't really believe in it means that the theory is all rubbish.
