I've been waiting aeons for this book to be written ... but by Ian McEwan, not Julian Barnes. The Sense of an Ending is truly affecting in the way that Amsterdam, Enduring Love and Black Dogs are, but - and make sure you're sitting down when you read this, Ian - doubly so. Never before have I read a book that so completely combines a lightness of touch with a depth of feeling.

Essentially a story of two halves, Part One brings to mind Charles Highway and his juvenile hedonism from Martin Amis's Rachel Papers, and Part Two has the echoes of regret and retelling found in Atonement. My initial experience with Damage was through the Louis Malle film starring Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Irons. It is a haunting piece, beautifully shot and wonderfully acted. Good though the movie is, however, it is as nought compared to the book.

Hart's prose is sublime - magisterial, yet at the same time, economical. The pace and plot grip like a morbid fever. And the first chapter is up there with that of Ian McEwan's Enduring Love as a contender for best-ever opener.

In short, read Damage and it's goosebumps all the way down.

Excellent machine, easy to set up recordings, dvd playback great. Only quibble is with the program info display, both at the top of the screen when you change channel and on the info screen when you press the i button. For some reason, if the machine has been on for a while, the information does not catch up and you are left with the details of a program that was on hours ago. Does anyone know how to fix this?
