I have never picked up a john connolly book before purely because i dont like the crime/dectective genre. the subject matter of this book interested me though as i love anything magical. It gripped me straight away, there were alot of vivid pictures created that will stay with me. The crooked man is a facinating character and truely creepy! from the first image of him inside Davids room to the descriptions of his torture methods under the kings castle where very unsettling. in him is the archetypical evil man that haunts our childhoods and stays with us in the back of our minds, never quite being understood. connolly has really tapped into primal fear here. I would never have picked up this book due to the cover and the subject matter, i thought it would be a sickly sweet story with characters i could'nt relate to. Because it was in the richard and judy book club i gave it a go and i am so glad i did. It is written so well that you really believe in these characters i could not put it down. I loved the way the twins had a sense of humour about themselves and their day to day life, i loved their personality differences and their little rows. The way the story is slowly revealed through each twin writing different chapters from their point of view keeps you gripped until the very end which.
