It IS a bit depressing but still cosy and moreish, 23 July 2011

I guess it is depressing depending on who you identify with. Ruth Sheen's smug `Earth Mother' character really gets on my nerves along with her equelly smug, patronising son. But the fact is, Lesley manvilles' character Mary is supposed to be the baddy. I do relate to her character, despite being only 33 and with a gorgeous boyfriend and starting a career. I still relate to that loser, rejected mentality of Mary and feel sorry for her. She just wants to be loved. Not a happy ending for anyone of a similar position. I can watch all Mike Leigh's films over again. You must be a fan of his work and a bit sentimental I guess to appreciate this, and I think it is particularly `English' which is… Read more
