In My Own Words:
I come (mainly) to praise, and to recommend, not to bury. I am an evangelist for the music, books, films etc that I love, and wish to express such enthusiasm as well as I can in the best way I am able.

Live At The Apollo (1962) ~ James Brown
5.0 out of 5 stars Please, please, please!, 30 July 2014
At school in the sixties I was the singer in a group (we didn`t really call them bands then) and among our small repertoire, which included the blues My Babe, the Stones' Satisfaction, and the Beatles' You`ve Got To Hide Your Love Away, we did a version of I`ll Go Crazy - which I think we must have got from the Denny Laine-era
Moody Blues. I can honestly say that my rendition fell somewhat short of that of James Brown on this astounding, if brief, live classic recorded at the Harlem Apollo in 1962.

Honesty ~ Curtis Mayfield
4.0 out of 5 stars Summer hot, 28 July 2014
I am so glad I got to see Curtis live a few years before he died, at a superb gig in Manchester. He was stunning, and performed songs from, among others, this album, with its sunshot sounds and likeably langorous feel.

He may not quite hit the heights of his very best albums here, but anyone who loves the man would want to have this. It`s all vintage Curtis, from the terrific opening track Hey Baby (Give It All To Me) to the sizzling flute-backed closer Summer Hot.
Along the way are five more songs that meld into one of his most enjoyable albums, in particular the… Read more

Ten Top Mezzos ~ Various
Of all the different types of operatic voice, the mezzo is my favourite. When in the right hands, as it were, I love its richness, its toughness, its occasional rawness and, when necessary, its raunchiness.
Here are ten great mezzos, from the veterans Marilyn Horne and Janet Baker - who could harldy be more different from each other - to slightly newer exemplars of the mezzo voice such as Cecilia Bartoli, who ringingly opens the disc with six minutes of unequivocal Rossini.
Along the way are the clear, dignified tones of the wonderful Frederica Von Stade singing Mozart, Regina Resnik`s almost overpowering aria from Samson et Dalila, an example from Grace Bumbry why she is not only… Read more
