In My Own Words:
I come (mainly) to praise, and to recommend, not to bury. I am an evangelist for the music, books, films etc that I love, and wish to express such enthusiasm as well as I can in the best way I am able.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bliss indeed, 18 Aug 2014
For my money 'Max' is our finest, most original and enjoyable composer.
This 1990s disc, now re-released by the enterprising Naxos label, consists of two stunning works: his piano concerto of 1997 (this was the premiere recording) and Worldes Blis from 1966-69.
Kathryn Stott plays the captivating concerto as adroitly as one could wish. It is a work that will only gain from repeated hearings, which it will certainly receive around these parts. Maxwell Davies has ideas aplenty, and this should be in the repertoire of many an orchestra as well as pianist.
Worldes Blis is vintage Max, with brooding atmosphere to spare, and with a bold use of the orchestra's colours, for example… Read more

Great heavens, can Phil Collins play the drums!
When the massively talented Peter Gabriel left Genesis, few would have chanced their arm on the next two records from Banks, Collins, Hackett & Rutherford as being more than a slight anti-climax. Well, this near-masterpiece is what the remaining members came up with, and it's quite something, has barely dated, and is beautifully played and sung, as if they were on some kind of musical steroids.
It sounds terrific too, one of the most successful remastering jobs a Genesis LP has received.
"Side One" is magnificent, four splendid tracks pretty much the equal of anything they achieved before or since.
I'm not quite so keen on… Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The knives are out, 17 Aug 2014
The first live LP by the astounding Genesis is a 47-minute extravaganza that leaves you exhausted and wanting more.
Taking five tracks from Trespass, Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme (Selling England hadn't yet been released) Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett & Rutherford played them on tour, including venues in Leicester and Manchester, where they were recorded in superb sound - though I found I had to turn it up to get the full benefit, this album not having had the full remastering job that other Genesis LPs have, arguably, benefited from.
All the members of the band shine, with no one to the fore, not even flamboyant Peter Gabriel, who is nevertheless in stupendous voice… Read more
