In My Own Words:
I come (mainly) to praise, and to recommend, not to bury. I am an evangelist for the music, books, films etc that I love, and wish to express such enthusiasm as well as I can in the best way I am able.

Queen of Soul - The Very Best of Aretha Franklin ~ Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin always sounded like a force of nature, and here are twenty-four reasons why.
To my mind it`s the best single-disc compilation of this great singer. For one thing, it includes (not all comps do) Baby, I Love You, one of my favourite songs of hers, with its marvellously heart-stopping chorus, and also the last track is the slightly later single - which I remember buying in 1973 - Until You Come Back To Me, a perfect way to end this generous selection.
Aretha seems to have been able to sing just about anything, which can mean that not all her versions of otherwise well-loved songs are appreciated by everyone. I`ve never been al that keen on her Spanish Harlem (though… Read more

Each track is an average of about three minutes long, there are eleven numbers over a mere thirty-five barnstorming minutes, and Roger Daltrey sings Wilko Johnson`s songs heroically, like Joe Cocker on steroids or a cockney Howlin` Wolf. At times he sounds like a man possessed, like someone bursting out of confining ropes. But time was of the essence, as we know...
Only one song isn`t an original, and it`s a terrific version of Dylan`s 1965 single Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window (which I went out and bought on 45 when I was fourteen). Wilko`s recorded this before, but it`s great to hear Daltrey belting it out.
There are a couple of slower songs, but mostly the band -… Read more
Rachel Getting Married [DVD] [2009] DVD ~ Anne Hathaway
4.0 out of 5 stars A wedding in Connecticut, 22 July 2014
There are so many well observed moments in this uncharacteristic film from Jonathan Demme, that the parts can seem greater than the whole. I`ve seen it twice now, once on its release at the cinema, and once on DVD, but it will be a pleasure to return to it from time to time, not least to see the resourceful, spunky Anne Hathaway as recovering alcoholic Kym, attending her sister`s wedding - which proves to be quite an affair in itself. Kym, we gradually learn, was mostly responsible for a tragedy in the family`s past, which all but Kym want to avoid bringing up.
Hathaway is brilliant, but so are Rosemarie DeWitt as Rachel, Bill Irwin as their appeasing father, and Debra Winger in a… Read more
