The Soldier's Return, sees the 'return' of Stephen Ryan to Ireland after his trials in France. He comes back to Ireland, burdened by what he has been through and by what he has done. He comes back to this novel a much richer charachter by his experiences in the first book. The Ireland he comes home to has changed in so many ways also, with the fear of conscription, fear and distrust of the returning soldiers and increased unrest with British rule.
This is the author's second novel and once again it's a highly engaging read. The characters in this novel are really well drawn and show that Mr Monaghan is really coming into his own. The secondary characters such as "Stephen's"… Read more
