After a brief bubbling-under period, this disc has now wormed its way into my psyche to the point where I feel compelled to put certain tracks - particularly "Things Went Wrong" and "The Saddest Flower in the Vase" - on repeat with every new listen. Considering that the music sounds mostly live and improvised, the playing is tight and the sound quality is considerably better than it could have been.

"Things" is unusual in the respect that it works as both background and foreground music, and that the playing can't really be traced back to a specific set of influences (something that's depressingly rare nowadays), although certain reference points - such as Miles' Davis early 70s… Read more

Of the ridiculous glut of Monkees compilations on the market - many of which contain track listings that are almost identical - I consider this to be the best of the bunch. It skips most of the filler tracks on their individual albums (and let's face it, there were quite a lot of them), and doesn't include many of Davy's sickly ballads. However, it does several underrated gems such as "You Told Me", "The Door Into Summer" and "As We Go Along" which aren't usually included on other anthologies.

Inevitably, there will be some debate amongs fans as to the meroits of the track selection ("Star Collector" but no "Daily Nightly"? "Zor and Zam" but no "Tapioca Tundra"?), but unless… Read more
