Beowulf: A New Translation by Seamus Heaney
Beowulf: A New Translation by Seamus Heaney
5.0 out of 5 stars Briiliant!, 15 April 2014
The story flows unending without pause or interruption- a masterpiece of translation. Withot being a poet, I could feel the rhythm and metre shaping this account- and it's a GREAT story, well worth all the years of effort.

The Inheritors by William Golding
4.0 out of 5 stars Highly imaginative, 12 April 2014
I am no fan of Golding, but this is probably his most enjoyable book. "Lord of the Flies" is very good but also disturbing; "Pincher Martin"is hard to comprehend: and "Rites of Passage" I thought awful. And there are, of course, allegations of plagiarisation.

The Good Soldier (Wordsworth Classics) by Ford Madox Ford
This is an enthralling story, difficult to put down. I was immediately reminded of Scott Fitzgerald- the effortless prose and the essential unhappiness. the structure is clever, chronology is ignored as we dart backwards and forewards, with the narrator constantly changing his position. indeed, his unreliabilty is key! His inability to take decisions, or do anything positive, is the basis for ALL the unhappiness. I do not for one minute believe that he did not know he was a cuckold.

A very, very sad tale.
