The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson

I bought this novel on the promise of a horror-thrill of the 'Wipper stwikes again in Whitechapowl!' variety. I was disappointed.

In my opinion, this novel really could have used a good editor. It is at least 100 pages too long. I have nothing against Chicago, or the Worlds fair of 1893, and indeed, some of the history was interesting (the invention of the Ferris Wheel, for example). However, I am a busy man, and there are things I'd rather be doing than reading about the minutiae of the personal lives of the fair's organisers. God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens

This book should replace Gideon bibles in hotels, and should be made available to every child (I almost added 'in Britain', but of course it should be 'on planet earth'). If only every religious (or simply questioning) person were to read this brilliant, utterly convincing, erudite, deeply researched and occasionally very funny book, we'd all be a lot happier.
Unlike Mr Hitchens, I wish that God was real. However, He isn't, and as a species, it really is about time we moved on.

A brilliant novel, I'd recommend this even to none-boxing fans. I didn't know much about Mr Ketchel before reading this, it's absorbing throughout, I whipped through the book in a couple of days. I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of Jack Johnson, which I think was probably pretty accurate!

This really is a superior sort of novel to the usual stuff you find. Highly recommended.
