I've had a computer at home for getting on for 20 years. First a PC now, since 2008, an iMac. I was aware of the sense of an UPS and knew of the company APC - but, in all that time I've never had an UPS.
A hard drive failure (requiring replacement) last month - and a costly data-recovery - prompted a change of approach. My iMac is now backed-up (Time Machine and a separate off-site bootable disk), anti-virus and firewall protected - the UPS was the last brick in the wall around all my data. Maybe it should have been the first one. Only when the others were in place did I see the hole.
