1.0 out of 5 stars I found it lacking, 14 Aug 2013
I got this book thinking it would be like an encyclopaedia of fashion styles - i.e "Here's a chapter on all the sleeve variations you could do, here's another one with all the collars you could do", but I found it to be a bit more random than that. For one thing, menswear and womenswear are the same chapter, with the two mixed about, and it seems filled with just random pictures of clothing. A lot of it is ethnic, or historical, which is interesting, but all the pictures are so small it doesn't really allow you to envisage how that would have been made, or how you could adjust to the design to something new. 3.0 out of 5 stars A little dissapointing, 14 Aug 2013
This book by itself, is literally a step by step list of how to make the basic building blocks of patterns. It is great for this, and if you've never done pattern cutting before it is helpful, and there is very little jargon, and you can literally follow the steps as they go, you don't have to have any prior knowledge.

Whilst I can follow the instructions, and make anything in this book, I don't feel that I'm really learning from it. I think this would be a great starting book, so long as you then got some other books that explain the WHY… Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, 14 Aug 2013
I ordered this book a few weeks ago as I was finding it difficult to get inspiration on finishing off outfits I've been making at home, and found it to be fantastic! Normally I find with dressmaking books in general, they are either too technical and hard to learn from, or they are so simple it's more like following steps than learning, but this book gets the balance perfect.
Although it uses a lot of technical instructions, it explains all of them simply, which is great because it means that I can now learn to understand these technical terms. It has a fantastic balance of pictures and words, from sketches on how to do certain stitches, to photos of what can be achieved with them,… Read more
