5.0 out of 5 stars Sultry . . ., 18 Jun 2014
I took a chance on this purely on the strength of a couple of reviews that I read in the culture/arts sections of two weekend newspapers. The reviews hinted at an album that had a 'summer-y' mood but the vibe is more downbeat than that adjective might suggest. Del Ray's voice is as sultry and enigmatic as ever and the production provides a dreamy and dense backdrop to her late-night tales of love and lust and loss and longing. I highly recommend it.

Since I Saw You Last ~ Gary Barlow

I bought this album principally on the strength of a song that Gary wrote for a Shirley Bassey album some years ago. There's is a quality to Gary Barlow's voice that I have often struggled with but this is the man who wrote 'Back For Good' so his songwriting chops are really beyond dispute. In spite of some of the sombre lyrics the mood of the album is positive and rather uplifting. Once again, there is that nasal-whiney thing going on but the chord progressions, the melodies and the arrangements are simply superb. As a composer he is a man of extraordinary gifts and I am pleased that I took a punt on this album.

Well, Robbie can carry a tune and his personality enlivens some of the tracks - in a mature and non-annoying way. The collaborations add little - though the class of Michael Buble is evident. I've listened to the whole of it several times but enjoyment has been limited and I can see that it will soon be relegated to the loft. I guess that I'm waiting for Robbie to once more make an album with Stephen Duffy. Intensive Care remains my favourite Robbie work.
