This version of Oliver Twist was gritty and engaging enough that my seven-year-old son wouldn't let me stop reading. The abridged retelling of the story managed to convey the key points of the tale, without skipping over the nasty bits (although they were toned down). It also still felt like Dickens, in the way that the complicated and interwoven connections between all the characters came out during the course of the book.

Having said that, the prose definitely wasn't Dickens and in places I felt there was too much plot and not enough context - but I can see that it would otherwise be hard to shrink the story into a readable volume for children. The language is simple enough… Read more

It drove me mad, but was popular with the children (mostly small boys) that played with it. Hasn't broken yet.

Because of the integral flask, there's hardly any space for sandwiches. If you take the flask out, you're left with a weird gap as the space can't accommodate anything else. If you use the flask, it smells plasticky however many times you rinse it. The hinge at the bottom broke after 4 days. We will not be replacing it with the same product.
