The Sudan Handbook is unique, authoritative, reliable and up-to-date. The work of recognised authorities from the Rift Valley Institute, some of them Sudanese, some non-Sudanese, it provides a vivid yet balanced look at a wide range of topics in Sudan and South Sudan. This really is an indispensable guide for those seeking to understand the troubled present and complex past of the two Sudans.
The Baobab's Covenant with Rain by Isam Babiker

Isam Babiker's moving and elegantly-written novel is in the tradition of Tayeb Saleh and of Leila Aboulela, subtle chroniclers of the complex transition between the traditional worlds of Sudan and the lives of cosmopolitan Sudanese. The Baobab's Covenant With Rain is a tragic love story, full of intricate emotional detail and rich descriptions of life in the city and the village. The secrets and complications in the lives of the characters are a microcosm of life in Sudan in the very recent past, where family bonds are all-important, but where romantic love has a power as great as anywhere. The balance it achieves between these elements is just right.
