Was this two separate films?... certainly seemed so and I agree with the majority of reviewers that whilst the WW2 era was (almost) totally absorbing the 1960's part of the story was a let down. Both aspects warranted a film each in their own right but neither was fully explored in this combined effort, and so I found I got 2 halves.. but together they didn't make a whole! The depiction of how the young Thomas was adopted by a most unwarlike 'peter pan' Soviet Commissar Tanker,(who turned out to be female), at the roadside was most odd... Not that one can say much as its a legal requirement so its got everything it should have and hopefully has omitted nothing.. Straightforward and explanatory in telling you what you need to know and essential for both learner drivers and for looking up the rules and regulations for all road users. Purchased for my learner driver daughter who finds it easy to use.

First saw the film following its release in 1973 on the big screen, promoted as offering the opposite good guys/ bad guys approach to that shown in Easy Rider of 1969. I recall the music as a central feature of the whole absorbing experience so was delighted when a few years back found I could get hold of the vinyl soundtrack.. even more delighted when I recently found that a CD has been released. Funny how certain things stay with you and still affect you over 40+ years but I always get goose bumps every time I hear 'Jolene's Dance' as it epitomises the whole sad, going nowhere, essence of the characters in the film.
