Spartacus: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray] Blu-ray ~ Liam McIntyre

Spartacus is a stylised telling of the story of the slave who broke his shackles and rose up against the might of the Roman Empire. This is a larger-than-life tale, told with exaggerated visuals: men winning often against the odds, shown in slow-mo with heart-pumping electric guitar accompaniment, and more blood than I've ever seen in a TV show before. The action is over-the-top, but it's a good over-the-top, with exciting, visceral fight choreography and quality photography and editing.

The writing, too, is decent, with the creators having gone for a poetic and semi-archaic feel which serves the intense drama of the show well while being pleasing on the ear.

The Big Book of Christmas Songs by Various
I was looking for a book that had the majority of well-known Christmas carols, with arrangements that were not super easy like many books seem to be out there, but that were musical while being easy to very rapidly learn/sightread for someone at my level (a little above Grade 8).

This is a step-up in length and complexity from some of the simpler books like the ones that feature Peppa talking about Mummy Pig or Daddy Pig (which have always been massive favourites with my daughter). There is another level up that I'm aware of and have read to her, such as the one with Peppa's birthday. She really likes "Peppa sleepover book"; it has a cute, cosy story which appeals to her, and makes it ideal for reading at bedtime. All Peppa's friends stay at Zoe Zebra's house and do sleepovery things, waking up Mummy and then Daddy Zebra by the end, who lulls them to sleep on the piano with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

It's a good book in a well-thought-out series. I like… Read more
