It takes a lot for me to abandon a book, but this was simply not working for me.
I like fantasy but this just felt like the author was just throwing in as many fairytale and mythological tropes as he could without forethought or design.
It was as if he hoped that by haphazardly lobbing in so many ingredients into his cauldron they would come together, as if by magic, into some coherent whole.
They didn't. It was as if the author was so self-consciously focused on trying to create a a fantastical story, the flow so necessary to do so, was absent.
