I'd have enjoyed this series so much more if I hadn't read the customer reviews first! Living abroad, I'd heard great things about Ballykissangel but my family had been adamant that "you mustn't know what happens" . . . . One customer reviewer manages to give away 90% of the intrigue in four lines. If like me you don't want to know in advance what happens DON'T READ THE OTHER CUSTOMER REVIEWS. But yes, a very nice series for all the family with gentle humour, discrete romance, beautiful scenery and a whole lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pays for itself!, 17 Mar 2011
My wife and I bought several copies of this wonderful portrait to lend a certain cachet to our otherwise drab holiday home. Imagine our delight when we discovered that Paul's wise yet stern eyes really did seem to follow a person around the room. Our children have never been better behaved since they know that "Paul is watching you" and we are able to leave them perfectly safely whilst we pop out for a drink or two at a little bar we know in the Algarve.

Well, I started it yesterday and finished it this morning and now I am in a hurry, a hurry to forget it all so that I can read it again. Maybe it's because the book traces a period that figured large in my own life, maybe just because the characters are so skilfully drawn but this is a wonderful book. Sadly the threads running through the narrative, the humour and the pathos, the good, the bad and the ugly characters (often the SAME people actually) and David Nicholl's fantastic ear for dialogue and memory for period details, mean… Read more
