This is an excellent recording that feels really alive, with an exceptional palette of colours. The rapport between the Emerson and Rostropovich is wonderful. Compared to R's later recording with the Melos, the tempi are quicker here, it is really down to personal preference, but this is my favourite for its sheer brio, a palpable excitement that is rarely far from the surface even in the slower, quieter passages of the outer movements. The Adagio is sublime, taken slowly but with a sense of movement that adds to its lustre. The Melos take the Adagio considerably slower, for me it is like a seated beauty without the dynamic grace of this Emerson recording. I never tire of this… Read more
