Wow. Where do i start! This book is really fantastic. It does have some hard topics in it so definitely shouldn't be for under 16's, but its really so descriptive and abstract! I did get a tad confused sometimes with some of the characters names and some bits because there is a ridiculous amount of info to take in - but that's the beauty of it! You can see how fragile everything is in life, all the material things but how love stays strong! that sounds really cheesy but it doesn't have that crappy fake love where its all like "omg he just looked at me" it is actually a strong love that LITERALLY stands the test of time. So basically...if you like sci fi ish inception like little bit of… Read more
This trilogy is splendid, yeah i HAVEN'T read the last one but i know that it will be just as enticing as the first two. I can't believe I have given it 5 stars - just because I never do that really. The plot of the trilogy is good, but there's more to that. The friendship and the toils of it are moving and relatable, the picture of Victorian life and the attidues in that era are beautifully portrayed and after I read it I start speaking in the elegant old-fashioned way because it is in my head!! The words are just lovely in this and its that which is holding me in its grasp. Yes, I know that it should really be about the plot, which is definitely very good, but the aspects around it and… Read more
I am still reading the Magicians Elephant at the moment, but I don't really know what to make of it. I appreciate it is for younger readers, and i do like the way it is written but there doesn't seem to be much going on in the book. It seems to be ripped of something and I just don't know what it is! The illustrations are really lovely but I think the book is too simple when it could have been elongated and have more substance in it, with only 200 ish pages of really big writing, it feels like it should be summed up really quickly instead of focussing on the finer points of the story and really bringing them out. Such a shame, because really I think it is a lovely story with great potential.
