All teachers need to read this - and all educators. This concept is an essential addition to the material those of us who wish to transform education can use to create a new education system globally. Focusing on the thinking part of developing learners, a lot of the advice and examples given also apply to developing the learner in general - in fact the book could be called 'Making Learning Visible' (I did suggest this once at a talk by the author). It is an inspiration and has wonderful examples and case studies for the working teacher.

A fairly comprehensive attack on the way things are done in many schools. Very personal if unpolished style but doesn't get in the way of the message. Why do I use the term 'suspense'? As the chapters roll by one finds oneself silently shouting, 'so tell us how it works'! I won't give the ending away but Mr Barnard's idea is interesting and would certainly solve a lot of the issues schools have. It might take a great leap of faith to actually implement though.

It's a mine of information and quotes for the educational transformer intent on creating an education system, school or classroom for the emerging present/future. It is an invaluable tool, resource and morale support for all of us as we venture into the unknown. I will certainly be quoting widely in the work we do at our NGO Developing Real Learners where we are aiming to transform… Read more
