Each new edition of English Paper Money has been an improvement over its previous edition and this 8th edition is no exception. Now it is 336 pages (7th edition - 252 pages) and on upgraded paper that feels superior to the touch and with an abundance of excellent illustrations. This edition also now gives pricing for the banknotes over 3 condition catagories rather than the previous two which is a real improvement. Although I happily give this book a 5 star rating I do have two minor gripes - there is a 24 page section on 'Treasury Essays' placed in the main section of the book between the Bradburys and the [Warren] Fishers which given its very specialist nature would be more suited as a… Read more

I've always voted Conservative and have a very low opinion of Labour politicians in general,but must admit to always having regarded Alistair Darling as a thoughtful and conscientious man. His book reinforces that opinion. The period of time this book covers will be talked about by historians for years to come. This book gives a fascinating insight into what went on during this time from a unique insider's view. It is very well written. Technical issues and concepts (eg. moral hazard) are explained for the layman yet without ever appearing to talk down to the reader.
