Quatermass And The Pit - Double Play (Blu-ray + DV&hellip Blu-ray ~ James Donald

Better than any of the other Hammer movie remakes of the original 'Quatermass' television series, 'Quatermass and the Pit' shines both in its plot, its characters and its production values. Andrew Keir's Professor Quatermass is my second favourite performance by any actor who has portrayed the man (my top pick being Andre Morell in the original TV version of Quatermass and the Pit). On blu-ray this movie takes my breath away. It makes me wish I could have been born early enough to have seen this picture on the big screen back in 1967! In my opinion, though, this disk is the next best thing. Simply fantastic!

'Regan' is a fantastic introduction to the wonderful world of 'The Sweeney', and the blu-ray version is a revelation. Happily the producers of this great disk accepted the fact that this is 1970s TV. They did not change the original aspect ratio or try to smooth away all the grain. The colour vibrant but not overdone, the picture quality is spot on and the sound excellent. As far as the show is concerned the incomparable John Thaw is superb as always as Jack Regan, and Dennis Waterman is great as the young George Carter. Great stuff!

I loved this series, not just for the fascinating premise and the weird and creepy happening of the week, but for the superb characterisation and consistently excellent performances by all involved. It was worth waiting to get this single complete series set on blu-ray too. Superb picture, great sound and a nice range of special features.
