I loved this book. I am a Dan Simmons fan, and have read most of his novels. His ability to switch between genres yet maintain his trademark page-turning suspense is remarkable, and this book is no different. I am not American, and had some reservations as to whether I would respond to a novel set in 1960's Mid West USA and characterised by children. But I shouldn't have been. Simmonds creates a depth of background and character that is delightful, and the 'horror' aspect of the book is sufficient to maintain interest and to make it easy to suspend belief.

My 7 year old daughter asked for a 'difficult' colouring book for a present. This book is perfect for children who love to colour in, yet are too old for the rather childish and easy subject matter for most colouring books. She is delighted with it.

Having read some of the good reviews of this book, I decided that the cost of the hardcover would be justified. It wasn't. I am relatively new to the sci-fi genre, but have enjoyed authors like Dan Simmons, Alistair Reynolds, Frank Herbert and arthur C Clarke immensely in recent years. While it might have been too much to expect Gary Gibson to compete with these luminaries, unfortunately 'Final Days' does not even come close. The central themes of the book - wormholes and the end of the world - should comprise more than enough subject matter for a truly gripping read.
