This is more of a diary, a narrative, rather than an autobiography. It tell the story of a couple who arrived in Australia, went from one employment to another, built a house together, were ripped off by various agents and employers and finally left to go back to Europe.

You have to read between the lines a little: the couple is gay - although never mentioned. The postscript mentions that the non-writing partner died later, at the age of forty, which must have been a terrible blow but lies outside the timescale of the actual book itself.

The vignettes of their travails in Western Australia I did find interesting, if not fascinating, in the way that others' day to day… Read more
