If superheros were real, and commonplace. A wonderful premise for this offbeat sitcom. Some really cleverly put together characters, plots, interactions, etc. I'm sure it could be interpreted as some searing political satire or indictment of British celebrity society or somesuch. But yeah, its damn great entertainment. Shame it only appears to have made one season.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can empathise all to easily with the protagonist. But then thats the obvious charm. Perhaps that is also why so many readers seem to have taken against this book - maybe they see a little too much of themselves in it. It is a funny book, but not "laugh out loud" funny. Its a book which had a wry smile on my face as I read it rather than stopping for periodic belly laughs. I found it far more "believable" than "White Merc With Fins". As with "White Merc" it has a lot of period references which make a lot of sense for those of us of the age to have been current to their use (late 1990s) and some of this was a bit nostalgic for me. I read this after I had read "Rancid Aluminium" which I believe to be the second novel from James Hawes. A lot of the things I really enjoyed about Rancid Aluminium were not so well developed in White Merc With Fins. For a start I have to say what he means are spoilers not fins. Fins are what you have on 1950s cars! The characters are more shallow, and they are shallow because they depict shallow people. I think if I had read this book when it first was published I would have empathised a lot more with the characters in it, especially the "hero" in that I was about his age at the time the book was written and probably shared a lot more of his attitudes then than I do now… Read more
