Candide by Voltaire
Candide by Voltaire
I had high expectations of this book. I enjoy good satire and I was expecting to be highly amused but I was disappointed. I found the book to be more cynical than satirical. Candide is the innocent optimist whose optimistic outlook is tested constantly by almost everyone he meets. Perhaps the quality of the satire has been diminished in translation because I found it childish, obvious and silly rather than clever and subtle as I would have expected. I have read much better satire in Private Eye. Also the message of the book seems to be that the world is a horrible place and everyone is evil. I prefer a more balanced view that there is good and bad.

I loved this book, the way it put you in the mind of the wolf throughout the whole book and described it's simplistic thought processes. Yet it was a clever wolf that quickly learned to adapt to every new situation of which there were many. It is a tale of struggle, dealing with difficult situations and adapting to them. A good lesson for us all. I was able to empathize with White Fang to some extent and it kept me up late at night when I should have been sleeping. Not a book to read at night if you want to sleep.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book!, 18 Aug 2013
a real page turner, time just flew away once I opened the book! A little like a cross between Stargate and Enid Blyton with a little romance for good measure.
