Maybe it's my fault, but I DON'T seem to be learning what I wanted to know about Evelyn Waugh, but I AM learning what I DIDN'T want to know about Frances Donaldson.

We are told nothing about this book either in it or in the so-called publisher's review on Amazon. I think it's actually one of Wodehouse's contributions to the much missed Punch magazine, and it certainly goes back a long way. It has an almost Edwardian flavour, and is chiefly interesting as an example of the days when he was still evolving his style.

The book was written in the late 90's, and therefore doesn't touch on the last 15 eventful years, but nevertheless it's worth reading as an illuminating assessment of our island history. Rather than being a mere chronology of events like many histories, the author looks behind key events and people to tease out the hidden themes that underlay them. All histories are potentially biased by the circumstances and perspective of the author, and Mr Johnson may not be altogether free from this criticism, but the book is an eye-opener and his conclusions, though in many cases extremely uncomfortable, are extremely robust.
