Small Town: A Novel Of New York by Lawrence Block

5.0 out of 5 stars Small Town? Huge story, 17 Sep 2014
First time around, Small Town made a huge impact on me. Itís very much a New York story, entirely influenced by 9/11. A decade later I was curious whether it would still feel as powerful, as involving and compelling as it did when Ground Zero was still little more than a hideous smoking hole, a raw wound at the heart of America.

This is not your typical Lawrence Block hard-boiled pulp fiction PI quick thriller. Nor is it some anti-Islamic, homeland security, global conspiracy shindig, packed with racial stereotypes, easy targets and square-jawed heroes. Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Although Heli is filmed with undoubted expertise and extracts some stunning performances from the (mostly) extremely young cast, itís ultimately an empty shell. The landscapes and photography are frequently awe-inspiring Ė to the extent that they have more effect than the frequently brutal scenes being played out within them.
Heli doesnít seem to know if itís a social… Read more
Zero: An Orbit Novel by J.S. Collyer
Zero: An Orbit Novel by J.S. Collyer

This is an ambitious first novel, one which creates a sprawling and credible near-future, a tense and turbulent political situation, and then throws a rogue crew of space pirates into the mix. Weíre a long way from old-school Ďhardí sci-fi which tried as hard to be technically accurate as it did to tell a good story. Nope, think instead of Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Firefly, Farscape and all. Zero certainly aims high.

Although Zero is set in space and in the future, itís not really space-opera as such. This isnít about galaxy-spanning travel: itís about human interactions set against the backdrop of a fragmenting social structure. This isnít the gleaming world of JJ Abramsí… Read more
