When an artist that I really enjoy brings out a new album I find I approach it with some trepidation, fearing that this one might be a let-down. Although I had watched the documentary shown on BBC to which this album was the mood music and enjoyed, still as a fan of King Creosote I had that worry that it would disappoint. It didn't. I think it is terrific, very varied and evocative of Scotland. There are beautiful, sad songs, political messages and memorable anthems.
The Sagas of the Icelanders (World of the Sagas) by Jane Smiley
As "Burial Rites" was said to have similar themes I read the Laxdaela Saga in a single edition and having enjoyed that turned to the Jane Smiley collection of the most important sagas. The specially commissioned translations worked very well and I was fascinated by the tales and found myself immersed in the lives of the protagonists. There is a helpful introduction to each saga, giving the background to its writing and sometimes to the relevance of the period in Icelandic history in which it was first told. I heard this catchy tune playing in the background in the gym and had to find out what it was. On closer listening I realised that it also has thought provoking lyrics and conjures interesting images - like the lighthouse in the title.
