I read this book cover to cover in two days (I was in hospital at the time!) and for a couple of academics the authors have done an excellent job of writing compelling action with narrative drive. But does it lack something? This was after all a most unusual election; maybe even a watershed in British politics. And it leaves many big questions: why did Labour hang on so relatively well after the bashing they and their leader had been taking well before and well into the election? and what of 'Cleggmania'? As a lifelong Liberal it seemed as if the promised land had finally arrived only it turned out to be a mirage. And what happened to public contempt for politicians after the expenses… Read more

Seeing Glass' ballet In the Upper Room blew my mind first time around and when the full score became available on CD I had to have it. On seeing the ballet a second time I was reminded that the CD lacks the heavy electronic weight of the live performance but it is a magnificent recording of wonderful music. All we need now is the DVD. The finale of the ballet is one of the great life-enhancing experiences.

When I saw this book I felt it would present some interesting ideas on the social impact of the rapidly developing array of infertility treatments and genetic technologies. It does but not as much as I hoped. The book is really about reproduction not sex although it supports the view that in the future the two will become completely separated because no one will bother with anything so messy and unpredictable as intercourse as a way of having the babies - it will just be fun. (I would like to see what other people think about that.)
The author is a former academic biologist so he is authoritative even if he gives no references. He is also calm in the face of all the fear and moral… Read more
