This is a brilliant book! It holds one's attention from the first page as it uncovers the story of spies, agents and double agents in Elizabethan England; the plots against the monarchy and the threats to a fragile Protestant state from the giant forces of Catholicism in continental Europe. The subject is amazingly well researched, particularly as many of the original sources are letters written in code. The author unfolds the narrative in a style which is accessible to the reader, whilst not undermining the complexity of the subject. He has an authoritive grasp of the period combining a deep insight into the motivations of the characters within it. Read it!
