2.0 out of 5 stars Go elsewhere...., 27 Sep 2010
A sweet enough book but I wish all the people who gave this book five stars would go away and read David Nicholls One Day which has a very similar plot (a 'When Harry Met Sally, will-they won't they get together' theme) and is a master-class in how to write a smart funny/sad novel that will pull at your heart-strings. Having read the two books within a few weeks of each other One Day just exposes Where Rainbows End for being fluffy, rather poorly written and just a bit dull.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book with bite, 6 Aug 2010
I was after an easy read and this YA book given to me by my daughter hit the spot. I whizzed through it in one evening and came away feeling as if I'd just watched a really enjoyable popcorn movie. It loses a star for being derivative of Twilight (vampires, school, forbidden love etc) - but I actually think By Midnight is better written than the Stephanie Meyer super-hit, which I found very 'Mills and Boony.' I loved all the atmospheric detail in By Midnight which comes from the Highgate setting and I liked the thriller twist which gave it that 'just one more page' readability.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good as ever, 29 July 2010
I love crime thrillers and Nicci French never disappoints me. The husband and wife writing team are so good at writing creepy, suspenseful page-turners and although you sometimes want to give their heroines a good shake, more often than not, once I start one of their books, I have to finish them in one sitting. One small moan - I've read most of their novels now and I have to admit they are beginning to feel a little bit samey. Note to authors - don't be afraid of going a little bit off piste next time!
