Joe Versus The Volcano[1990] DVD ~ Tom Hanks
4.0 out of 5 stars Wacky and adorable, 19 Nov 2013
This so 'old' by modern standards but wacky and adorable and there are wonderful glimpses of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in their early career. She plays three parts in the film and is quite brilliantly different in each. Makes you realise what a great actress she is.
The Great Gatsby [DVD] DVD ~ Robert Redford
The Great Gatsby [DVD] DVD ~ Robert Redford
5.0 out of 5 stars Gatsby mania, 29 July 2013
True to the book, Robert Redford is much more Gatsby that LdC. However Mia Farrow is Mia Farrow - I can't see how anyone would have a thing for her for five years, but that doesn't spoil the film. Tom Buchanan is just perfectly cast, and so is the detached, aloof, distant Nick Carraway. In the book he opens with the statement that he is not going to be too critical of other people, well, maybe not openly, but in the film you can see this so brilliantly underplayed. The tragic ending is carefully done - you children at home could watch it. This is the version for me. But read the book - the writing is sublime.
The Family Man [DVD] [2000] DVD ~ Nicolas Cage
The Family Man [DVD] [2000] DVD ~ Nicolas Cage
5.0 out of 5 stars Such a clever film, 29 July 2013
and so very touching. can't rate it highly enough. The two leads are perfect for each other but the star of the show is the little daughter who gets to the root of the problem right away. A delight.
