I like de Botton's books and this is no exception. However, it is a bit thin - ie it has one or two strong ideas, but they could probably have been dealt with in a long magazine article rather than a short book. Worth reading - it takes about 1-2 hours to finish, and that is probably about right (there isn't enough in here to justify a lot more time than that).

After using PCs (and Adobe Premiere Elements) for many years I bought a Mac and thought I would try Final Cut Express. I was very surprised to find that, unlike Adobe Premiere Elements on the PC, Final Cut Express will not import the video files from my (near new) Sony camcorder. The reason is that Final Cut Express will not import MPEG 2 files - so I had to download a Quicktime plug in from Apple (another 15) and then a piece of free software called MPEG Streamclip to convert the files in order to edit them on Final Cut Express.

Now in order to edit any video from my camcorder I have to first run it through MPEG Streamclip to export it into another file type before putting it… Read more
