2.0 out of 5 stars A must-read, 2 Mar 2012
1) Contains many 'unknown sources'. Yes, many of them are completely unknown and thus impossible to verify- I notice many people on Amazon have said "the bibliography is massive, so impressive!", but when it has many like "interview with a family member", "interview with a Russian insider", and, my personal favourite "interviews with people who had been told"(!), how is anybody supposed to research this? MoBo Gao, in his book, also chronicles quite a few instances of devious attribution.

2) The writers' pathological hate for Mao- if you're looking for a balanced biography, don't get this. It's fairly obvious that Chung and Halliday have set out to write a negative book- it's… Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, 25 Feb 2012
Acting more as a traveler than a journalist, Brian Hall travelled through all of the republics (and Kosovo) of the former Yugoslavia. It's always going to be hard to make a guide book for the kindle- it's quite hard to just flick through the book, and maps aren't going to be good. That's not really LP's fault. But many of the characters don't show up on the kindle version (they just come out as squares, which is fairly annoying when trying to find out a restaurant name)- unless that's my kindle's issue?

I do have my doubts, however, as to the research of the less-travelled areas. As someone who is currently living in Changsha, Hunan, and has lived there for 4 years, I find the attractions and restaurants listed as utterly bizarre due to their omission of completely obvious and the most interesting places in… Read more
