The book helped me understand how young people are so vunerable to extremist ideology and how easily brainwashed they can be. The author's experience should also help us develop ways to combat such extremism both at home, in schools, and in religious institutions whether they be Muslim, Christian or Jewish. We should preach and teach our children - at an early age more harmony and tolerence as that is the only way we can have a mature and progressive society. The book is highly recommended.

Frank Gardner describes what every young man would have liked to do in his twenties and thirties (except getting shot). His spirit of adventure, his travels in the Middle East , his emersion in the culture gave him a better insight into that part of the world than some of the best available academic studies. Living with an Egyptian family in a poor neighborhood of old Cairo, spending many days traveling the desert with a Bedu tribe in Wdai Rumm in Jordan, jetting around the Middle East during the boom years of the eighties and nineties makes fascinating reading.
