This is a good story which if the editing had been sharper would have made a great read. Some of the passages are so well written it draws your breath. There are long sections (Amsterdam) which could and should be much crisper however I would recommend this as a good summer read

No idea why I picked this and I'm sorry I did. It's badly written, it's characters are one dimensional and the ending was so poor I laughed out loud - don't waste your time on this one

I bought this on a recommendation of a friend. It is a stunning novel. For me, the tattoo thread is not necessary however I loved the historical context of post war Asia, the tensions as the politics play out and the detail of Japanese gardening. I wouldn't necessarily have picked this out but I am glad I did and will read others from this author
