Like others, I have read many books on the subject and visited a number of WW1 cemetaries in France & Belgium, and my interest is primarily in 'the soldier's story' as opposed to the military strategies and politics of that terrible time. However, I found this book quite tedious, not least because of the writing style (in the present tense) and the narrative all seems a bit disjointed - although, if a book's good enough, that becomes irrelevent. Sorry to say, but in my opinion, 'our hero' is a bit too good to be true and I found myself very increasingly irritated by him.
