I bought this book based on the many glowing reviews to be found on the internet and on the front and inside covers. It was such a disappointment! The characters are too vague, one dimensional and improperly formed to be sympathetic, as if the author was a little unsure of what he wanted. The main character, Eilis Lacey, is an example of this; the reader is never given her exact age or a proper physical description of her and, more importantly, she does not seem to have any particularly strong opinions about events or people, including her supposed 'one great love'. If you are interested by the plot synopsis read the book instead (Enduring Love). It has much more depth which cannot be shown on film. The actors' try their best (Bill Nighy, as ever, is great in a sadly quite minor role) but it's not the easiest book to make into a film and, while I'm not usually one for writing negative reviews, I wish they hadn't bothered.

My class is sudying this for A Level coursework and under close analysis it's really interesting and thought provoking. Ian McEwan introduces thoughtful ideas and clever points about life and human nature. I felt it also worked as a novel for entertainment but not as well because the plot is not exactly fast-paced. IMPORTANTLY if you do read it, also read the Appendices at the end...
