The plague,or La peste, is possibly the greatest work of one of France's great writers. The book is painfully personal, as were all Camus' works, centring as it does around the second world war and it's effect on the helpless population. Camus was involved with the French resistance, and the central characters are posited as resistance fighters. But everything here is allagorical; the plague is the German army, the doctor is the resistance fighter. He outlines the effects of an outbreak of the black death on an industrial town in France.
