I have used Peter Hayman's Pocket Guide since an edition I bought in 1981. I have just replaced it as the first one has finally broken apart. On reflection, I should have replaced my copy as each new edition came out. Looking through this copy, I find a much more comprehensive guide to recognition, including more of the nuances that distinguish look-a-like birds. It also lists almost a 100 more birds than my first copy. It's an ideal birding book to slip in your pocket whenever you go for a walk.
If you want a more comprehensive guide, I would recommend Collins Bird Guide
