Johnny Guitar [DVD] DVD ~ Joan Crawford
Johnny Guitar [DVD] DVD ~ Joan Crawford
I liked this atypical and deservedly famous 1954 western. Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.

Somewhere in Arizona, in a little town whipped by winds, a tough, an aging saloonkeeper named Vienna (Joan Crawford, grandiose) struggles against the hostility of a local cattle baron John McIvers (Ward Bond), who doesn't appreciate her owning land and business in a place he considers as exclusive domain of himself and his cronies, like the owner of local bank. Even worse, the sister of the bank owner, Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge, impressive), a woman probably mentally unbalanced, hates Vienna passionately for reasons which actually are not fully explained -… Read more
Long Voyage Home [DVD] [1941] [Region 1] [US Impor&hellip DVD ~ John Wayne
I liked this excellent 1940 drama about sailors A LOT and I found it very moving. Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.

PRECISION: this is a Region 1 NTSC DVD - it will not play on Region 2 equipments.

In early 1940 British cargo s/s "Glencairn" goes from West Indies to Baltimore and from there to England. She carries a dangerous cargo and sails alone, unescorted - and as German U-Boats and long range "Condor" bombers are roaming the Western Approaches it will be one helluva long voyage home... But this is not the only reason for the title of this film and in fact this perilous Atlantic crossing is not the most important element of the film - it is… Read more
Dillinger [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] DVD ~ Lawrence Tierney
I liked this 1945 gangster movie/film noir, even if it is definitely NOT the true story of Dillinger and his gang. Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.

Precision: this is the review of a Region 1/NTSC DVD release of this film, which will not play on European Region 2 equipment. I preferred purchase this version as it has English subtitles (not available on Region 2 DVD release).

The film begins with John Dillinger's father narrating early years of his son's life and especially his first crime - which in this film is shown as a really, really pathetic thing... Once he finds himself in prison he meets a veteran bank robber, Specs Green, and learns a… Read more
