An Outcast of the Islands by Jose Conrad
An Outcast of the Islands by Jose Conrad
5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, 29 April 2014
Last read this when I was 15 and was very struck by it at the time, as it is intensely atmospheric and captures a sweltering atmosphere of thwarted luck, lust and frustration, played out amongst ethnic and religious rivalries. What is striking is how modern the book is and how relatively untainted by the bigotries of its time. Conrad's balanced mastery of the English language, from colloquial speech to evocations of unrelenting nature, is rich, natural and unmannered.
Against Oblivion: Some Lives of the Twentieth-Cent&hellip by Ian Hamilton
5.0 out of 5 stars well done, 29 Mar 2014
Not an easy task and very well done. Incisive and balanced judgment throughout bringing a measure of fresh perspective to known figures and some insight to the less well known, prompting further examination.

I dont know how a serious publisher can allow such a shabby kindle version to be sold. A barely credible product, especially when compared to the paperback.
