A Kind Of Loving [DVD] [1962] DVD ~ Alan Bates

I couldn't recall having seen this particular 'kitchen sink' drama before i bought this dvd. i would recommend it as one of the less dynamic entries in the genre, but it is none the worse for that. the story is broadly familiar in conception, but is gracefully told with uniformly excellent performances, particularly from the iconic leads. elegant direction and photography, the dvd transfer is clean, although i thought the sound a little variable.

5.0 out of 5 stars a lovely book, 26 April 2009
this is a lovely book, a collection of essays on various aspects of rural living, largely set in the english midlands of the 1930s, pervaded by a seductive melancholy engendered by the looming world war. bb was also a great illustrator, and his work graces these pages alongside his elegant prose.

5.0 out of 5 stars radiant, 26 April 2009
given the content of his review, i'm surprised the previous reviewer awarded this beautiful book so few stars. i would entirely endorse the glowing comments describing the work as a real treat; the author's lyrical prose and enchanting illustrations are so evocative, and are perfect for calming body and soul at bedtime. Please also treat yourself to 'the countryman's bedside book', which is also heartily recommended
