The Penguin History of Western Philosophy by D. W. Hamlyn
The text is worthless as an introduction. It leaps quickly into concepts and terms with little explanation and relies upon a great deal of prior knowledge of the subject. But the book has never claimed to serve as an introduction - I get the impression that the author attempts to map out or, as another reviewer said, sketch, the history of philosophy in a single volume. For that I am certain he does well, and for anyone who wants a speedy reference of the evolution of ideas it may be very useful. But being that histories, now (though perhaps not at the time of writing), are used primarily as an introduction to the subject, and not as a means for the contemplation of a master, I rank it two… Read more
