The Plague Court Murders by John Dickson Carr
The Plague Court Murders by John Dickson Carr

At his best John Dickson Carr/Carter Dickson ranks among the greatest of the Golden Age mystery writers (especially the locked-room masterpieces), but at his worst, as here, he's unspeakably bad. If Ms Cookman actually gained inspiration from this, I shall take care not to try any of her own stuff. The Plague Court Murders has all the old faults of his inferior work: a ludicrously involved mise-en-scene, some really dreadful writing, an atmosphere of insane unreality permeating the whole and, in Henry Merivale, an absurd, unbelievable detective. For Carr on top form try The Hollow Man.
Blunders and Brilliancies (Cadogan Chess Books) by Ian Mullen

This is the most enjoyable chess puzzle book I have come across. The positions, taken from actual grandmaster and master games, are graded for difficulty, from one star to five. They are all intriguing, some of the winning lines are truly beautiful and the comments are both intelligent and pithy. There are also three great sets of tactical tests at the end (again from actual play). Challenging and - what many puzzle books are not - consistently entertaining. Great stuff.
